Memorization and application of academic vocabulary
Although memorization of facts may often be the basis idea of learning, it produces an inconsistency of expected learning without actually having been taught how to learn. Gardner (2000) states that “Schooling should be to develop intelligences and to help people reach vocational and avocational goals that are appropriate to their particular spectrum of intelligences. People who are helped to do so, feel more engaged and competent and therefore more inclined to serve society in a constructive way.” There have been many studies like the research performed by Paul W. Foos and Paula Goolkasian (2005) showing that people do remember pictures more easily than remember words. By attaching a meaningful image to word to be learned, learners will be able to better retain and recall their meanings. The Word Link technique uses this idea of creating a meaningful picture to a word you want to learn. By creating an image based on the meaning of the target word, the learner can later better recall the word itself with its correct meaning and pronunciation
