Aesthetics of Perfection and Imperfection
Interdisciplinary research topics include the areas of architecture, literature, music, urban environment, sport, history, and modern cultural studies. Some of these approaches also connect the aesthetics of imperfection to ethical concerns and the shaping of the ethos in various communities and institutions. The Aesthetics of Perfection and Imperfection is a multi-year, international, interdisciplinary project involving a conference at the University of Tokyo (April 2017), an international symposium at Kansai University (October 2018), journal articles, and a book collecting original essays on the field that was published by Routledge (2023). Imperfectionism, the leading concept of this research initiative, is defined as the disciplined refusal by an artist to return to make a correction. Several benefits to the understanding of imperfectionism are being examined, including (1) aesthetic openness: keeping the process and the work open to unplanned events, such as organic and natural influences; (2) cultural openness: imperfectionism embraces heterogeneity (uniformity) of content and style, and opposes homogeneity; (3) a philosophical understanding of the social and cultural value of important art forms such as improvised jazz, collaborative composition, and time-bound art forms such as Japanese sumi-e painting.

S. T. Coleridge and Contemplation
Hitherto the philosophical works of S. T. Coleridge have been understood primarily in terms of his early and middle-period concepts, such as fancy, imagination, and the symbol. My research draws from this work, but, moreover, emphasizes his recently-edited later-period work. The understanding I have recently formed of Coleridge's philosophy centres around the more metaphysical terms of reason, idea, noesis and contemplation. I have recently disseminated my work in articles in international, peer-reviewed journals; two conferences that I organized (at Kyoto Notre Dame University, and at Cambridge University, UK); in a book I published with Oxford University Press (Coleridge and Contemplation, 2017); and I am currently in the process of bringing my monograph on the subject to publication, with a book titled Coleridge's Contemplative Philosophy.

18th-19th-century idealist philosophy of life and matter
This multi-year project will produce journal articles, an international symposium, and a multi-author book published by a major academic press. Peter Cheyne is the Principal Investigator, and the project has eighteen contributing academics specialized in German idealism, Coleridge studies, the history of idealism, and the history of the life sciences. The project will assess Coleridge's interdisciplinary contributions to the life sciences, the ontology of powers and natural forces, and the idealism–materialism debate. It will also argue for the continuing relevance in the twenty-first century of Coleridge's view of a science of material dynamics subsumed within a more fundamental ontology of laws, ideas, and universal reason.

Intuition and Transcendence: Art, Religion, and the Everyday
An inquiry into consciousness and intuition, explored through phenomenological analysis and typology. The research will investigate various modes of intuition (from hunches and presentiments to rational insights and apprehensions of ideas) and their connections to experiences of transcendence, such as profound aesthetic, religious, or mystical states. The study embraces a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing philosophy, art, literature, science, and anthropology, aiming to emphasize the significance of intuition and transcendence not only in extraordinary contexts but also in everyday life. The project examines four main types of intuition and experiences of transcendence: everyday intuition, rational or intellectual intuition, ordinary experiences of transcendence, and extraordinary experiences of transcendence. It scrutinizes their role in knowledge acquisition, potential for illusion and error, and their tendency to elude conventional language and concepts. The project emphasizes the interplay between intuition and the boundaries of language, seeking to articulate what often seems ineffable. The methodology combines analytical-argumentative and historical-speculative approaches. The former discerns distinct types of intuition and transcendence, offering a clearer understanding of these experiences. The latter draws from the history of philosophy and science as well as art and literature to contextualize these notions within different intellectual traditions. Throughout, the project examines the hitherto unexplored tension between intuition, which often lies beneath or at the lower threshold of meaning and communication, and transcendence, which may exceed these bounds. The project will explore the potential for individuals to cultivate mindful insights and intuitions, particularly focusing on the role of imagination. It traces historical and contemporary perspectives on intuition, including their relevance in scientific discovery, artistic creation, and philosophy. The research aims to provide a deeper comprehension of how intuition interfaces with the understanding of underlying universal principles and consciousness, potentially opening avenues for practical applications in education and aesthetics. The outcomes will include scholarly articles, workshops, and conferences, culminating in a monograph and an interdisciplinary edited collection. It seeks to illuminate the intricate relationships between intuition, transcendence, and human experiences, offering insights into the fundamental nature of consciousness and its connection to the cosmos. The research aligns with a philosophical tradition while pushing boundaries, seeking to elucidate what is often elusive and to provide a profounder grasp of these intricate phenomena.

Ralph Waldo Emerson and the formation of the modern mind
Emerson's Continuing Cultural Relevance This research addresses the continuing cultural influence of Emerson’s thinking to promote it as a time-honoured, home-grown American philosophy that, if updated, could bridge the cultural, political, and religious divisions that have been destabilizing American ideas and identities in the 2010s and 2020s. The essay will examine how Emerson modernized the cultural understanding of nature while cleaving to an ancient and profound notion of spirit. The essay will read Emerson’s famous image of contemplation, the ‘transparent eyeball’ (‘Nature’), alongside Coleridge’s ‘eyeless face all eye ... an organ full of silent sight’ (‘Limbo’, 1811). Emerson and Coleridge (also a one-time Unitarian minister), describe with strikingly similar imagery an absorbent, rapt contemplation that transcends mere passivity through attention, concentration, and a holding open of the whole mind and its senses. Although both thinkers abandoned their adherence to Unitarianism, they alike retained a commitment to a general universalism in a cosmology with a divine and transcending core and as advancing a theory of spiritual renewal in which no-one need be left behind.
